Yu Yuphoria is the new smartphone from Micromax’s founder Rahul Sharma’s YU smartphone brand, which runs CyanogenMod OS 12.

Yuphoria’s biggest USP is of course the price. It will cost Rs 6,999 and has a metal-frame body. The basic features of the Yuphoria are: 5-inch HD screen, Snapdragon 410 processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB ROM, CyanogenMod OS 12 running on Android 5.0 and an eight megapixel rear camera with a five megapixel front camera.

Design, Screen: Yu Yuphoria definitely looks great for a Rs 6,999 smartphone and the metal frame gives this smartphone an expensive look, which users in this budget category will appreciate. The Yuphoria comes in black with buffed steel and a white with champagne gold colour options.

Yuphoria is 8.25 mm thick, weighs 143 gms, although when you hold the smartphone it feels bulky and doesn’t really look that thin. In terms of design, Yuphoria’s camera is bang in the middle of the smartphone’s back cover (a point that Rahul Sharma emphasised a lot in the presentation) and has a ‘saturn-ring’ inspired design. Though the camera does really jut out from the device. The other unique design elements are the power and volume buttons. The power button is in the middle of the volume rockers.

The Yuphoria has a 5-inch HD screen with 294 ppi density. There’s Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on the screen for protection from scratches and Yu has used full lamination technology to ensure better reading in sunlight.

Processor, Memory and Battery: The Yuphoria comes with 2GB RAM, 16 GB ROM, which can be expanded via microSD with 32 GB limit. The processor is a Snapdragon 410 64-bit 1.2 Ghz quad-core processor, along with Adreno 306 for graphics.

This is the entry-level processor from Snapdragon. With recent Snapdragon processors, heating has been an issue, and since this has a metal frame, we’ll have to say if this heating issue is aggravated in the Yuphoria device.

Yuphoria is powered by a 2230 mAH battery and Yu is claiming this has quick charging which lets the phone go from zero to 65 percent in 45 minutes.

This is a 4G Dual-SIM smartphone and sensors in the Yuphoria are: an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, Proximity sensor, 6-axis Gyroscope and an Electronic compass.

Camera: Unlike the Yureka which came with a 13 megapixel camera, the Yuphoria has an eight megapixel rear camera. The front camera is a 5 megapixel with a wide lens, which Yu claims captures more in a selfie than the other smartphone cameras. The Yuphoria front camera has a higher resolution that the Redmi 2 which has a 2 megapixel front camera.

OS: The YU brands of smartphones run CyanogenMod OS which is a highly customisable build of Android. Yuphoria runs CyanogenMod 12 OS on Android Lollipop.

The new addition to CyanogenMod OS is Choice which has features like a Dialler with true-caller inbuilt, email powered by Boxer and Audio Fx. There’s also an App Theme function which lets users set a particular theme for one app. Users have the power not to use the Choice option.

Interestingly, Sharma did not mention if the Yuphoria would get options of servicing from home and if the warranty will hold if users decide to root the smartphone, like it was with Yureka.

The Yuphoria smartphone is the low-budget CyanogenMod device from YU which will give Chinese brands like Lenovo, Xiaomi a tough competition. Given the price, metal frame and the CyanogenMod OS, it looks like a great deal, though how the users respond remains to be seen.
