NEW DELHI: Narendra Modi confidant and BJP General Secretary Amit Shah was on Wednesday accorded ‘Z-plus’ category security by the home ministry following high threat perception. Sources said close to 70- odd personnel, drawn from CRPF, would be guarding Shah in rotation when he moves.
The security upgrade for Shah to the highest category comes amid speculation that his elevation as BJP president is imminent and could happen any day.
This is the second decision government has taken in the matter of VIP security after upgrading security of NSA Ajit Doval last month from Z category to Z plus. Doval is guarded by personnel from CISF.
The decision to give Shah top VIP security has come on a day Home Minister Rajnath Singh held a meeting in the ministry to review VIP security and asked cover of various personalities to be strengthened if required.
The BJP leader, who was instrumental in the party’s landslide victory in Uttar Pradesh in Lok Sabha elections, has so far been under the security of Gujarat Police.
Shah, a former Minister of State for Home of Gujarat, was arrested in 2010 in connection with the alleged fake encounter killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kauser Bi and Sheikh’s associate Tulsiram Prajapati.
