Sania, Martina win 8th title of 2015
The Spice Girls of the women’s game Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis clinched their fourth straight title on Saturday, winning the China Open and extending their winning streak to 17 matches. The Indo-Swiss pairing, having already won the US Open, Wuhan and Guangzhou in recent weeks, rallied to beat the Chan sisters – Taipei’s Hao Ching and Yung Jan – 6-7 (9), 6-1, 10-8 in a roller-coaster final that gave the pair their eighth title of the season.
Interestingly, the last team Sania and Hingis lost to was the Chans, in the semifinals of Cincinnati. Sania and Hingis went ahead 2-0 before the Chan sisters ran away with four of the next five games. The fifth game went to the deciding point and the top seeds thought they had clinched it as it looked like the older Chan’s racket had caught the ball.
The umpire thought otherwise. The pairs kept pace, Sania and Hingis doing well to fightoff a set point in the tenth game to level scores. In the tie-break the Indo-Swiss combine went ahead 4-0 and 5-2 before their opponents rallied to close out the set after 60 minutes.
The World No.1 pairing came back strongly in the second set, storming to a 5-1 lead before Hingis served out the set. In the super-tie-break, the fancied duo led for most part, before closing it out on their second match point.
Nadal, Djoko in final
Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal brushed aside the challenge of Italian Fabio Fognini to set up a title clash with Novak Djokovic. The 14-time Grand Slam champion, who trailed his 28th ranked opponent 1-3 in this season’s head-to-head clashes coming into the last four clash, won 7-5, 6-3 to storm into his first hardcourt final of the season.
Djokovic extended his China Open winning streak to 28-0 with his 6-2, 6-3 win over Spaniard David Ferrer in the second semifinals. Interestingly, since the China Open final here two years ago, Nadal has won just one of the duo’s last seven clashes.
