Significance of the Puthandu or Tamil New Year, as per Mythology, is – it is believed that on this day Lord Brahma started the creation of the world. Also, it is considered that the day should be started with making a financial transaction, as it is considered to bring prosperity and happiness in the family. The first transaction is named Kai-Vishesham. This great day is celebrated with equal fervor and quest in the neighbouring country Sri Lanka.
It is a public holiday there. It is celebrated in the same way as in India. Farmers first plough their field this day as it is considered to bring good luck for harvest.
The first day of the year is also the perfect time to bury the past mistakes and begin a fresh. The perfect way of celebrating the Puthandu is to leave the baggage of past behind and begin as if we are born on the day of New Year.
