Bengal has had a rich heritage of musical talents, especially singers, most of them being composers as well- Kishore Kumar, Hemant Kumar, Manna Dey and the late father son duo of SD and RD Burman. The latest entrant is the multifarious Anupam Roy with PIKU. For the uninitiated Anupam became a household name, not only in Bengal but elsewhere too, with Shoojit Sirkar’s AUTOGRAPH. So let us check out Anupam’s PIKU without wasting any time
Soothing and tranquil, ‘Bezubaan‘, is music to the ears with a lovely blend of Hindustani (mindblowing sitar) and western arrangements and dew fresh tune. Chorus is delightful and so is Anupam’s singing. Lyrics are simply class.
Since PIKU is a road movie, a ‘Journey Song‘ is certainly the call of the day and Anupam Roy comes up with a melodiously sweet sounding number which has various shades of rock, pop and Bengali interludes . Shreya Ghoshal puts up a stunning performance.
‘Lamhe Guzar Gaye‘ is philosophical and brooding, the song rests on a lovely flowing tune and nice background guitar strums, beads and percussion(s). Anupam renders the number well. Lyrics are apt and quite unique.
The title track introduces the female lead Piku (Deepika) nicely, sketching her character and giving a good insight into the theme of the movie as well. Sunidhi sings with gusto, getting into the mood of the lively song.
The love song, ‘Teri Meri Baatein‘, may have a heard before ‘mukhda‘ but ‘antara‘ is very melodious. Anupam does full justice as a composer although his diction leaves a lot to be desired.
To sum up, the audio of PIKU is melodious and soothing with meaningful lyrics, and new (for Bollywood) composer-singer-lyricist, Anupam, shows his class. The only hitch, the songs are somewhat uni-dimentional with not much variety. One also misses Amitabh the singer. Our picks, ‘Bezubaan‘, ‘Journey Song‘ and ‘Teri Meri Baatein‘.
