Gagan Narang Wins World Cup Bronze And Olympic Quota

The smiles returned to the Indian shooting contingent on Friday as London Olympic bronze medallist Gagan Narang won the bronze medal in Men’s 50m Rifle Prone event at the season’s second ISSF World Cup, in Fort Benning, USA. The medal also helped him to bag India’s third Rio Olympic quota in shooting.

Earlier, rifle shooter Apurvi Chandela had secured a Rio Olympic quota place when she clinched the bronze in Women’s 10m Air Rifle at the first World Cup in Changwon, Korea. Last year, ace pistol marksman Jitu Rai had won India’s first 2016 Olympic quota place when he picked up the silver medal in 50m Free Pistol event at the World Championships in Granada.

Gagan Narang had qualified for the final in 8th place

Veteran shooter Gagan Narang, who was placed 13th after the Elimination Round Relay, secured the eighth place in qualifications on Friday. With scores of 102.3, 105.0, 105.5, 104.3, 105.1 and 104.1 in the six series, Gagan shot a total of 626.3.

The other Indian contenders in this event – Surendra Sinh Rathod and Chain Singh finished 13th and 23rd respectively. While Rathod shot 624.7 (102.8, 104.8, 103.4, 105.0, 104.8 and 103.9), Singh mustered a total of 623.9 (102.4, 103.9, 104.5, 104.6, 105.8 and 102.7).

Final Round

In the final, Gagan shot a total of 62.8 (30.9, 31.9) in the first competition stage. In the second competition stage, which is also the elimination stage, the Indian ace posted a score of 123.0 which made his overall total 185.8. That fetched him the bronze which is India’s first medal at the 2015 Fort Benning World Cup.

The gold went to American Michael McPhail who totalled 208.8 while the silver was clinched by Norwegian Ole Kristian Bryhn whose final score was 206.3.

The Rio Olympic quota places were awarded to the gold medallist McPhail and bronze medallist Narang as the silver medallist Bryhn had already secured a quota place before.
