Many ordinary songs and scenes have been made memorable by a shirtless Ranveer Singh — be it Gunday’s fight sequence(s) or Ram Leela’s Tattad Tatttad dance. However, there are unfortunate things that a glimpse of Ranveer Singh’s bare back also can’t save. One such thing happens to be the latest song of Dil Dhadakne Do. The video of the title track was released today and it features the ensemble cast — Farhan Akhtar, Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma and ofcourse Singh– dancing around in a nautical themed set. With this song Priyanka Chopra makes her debut as a playback singer and it doesn’t take more than one listen to tell you why it is a bad idea. The actress’ husky voice barely seems like the right vocal for this high energy retro song. While Chopra sounds low key, her co-singer and also co-star of this film, Farhan Akhtar sounds like he always does — like someone who has a very bad cold. The only saving grace is Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music which sounds peppy and catchy. Javed Akhtar is also spot on with his simple yet lovely lyrics.
While the nautical theme of the video seems appealing the dance moves can at best be described as those exercises you learnt in school during P.T. class and if this video is any indication a short tunic, like the one that Anushka Sharma is wearing clearly doesn’t have enough leg room for any of those steps.
What makes this video really boring is the fact that while the back-up dancers in their sailor outfits look like they are having fun and actually enjoying the song, the main cast looks bored and mechanical. Hopefully they will look a little more alive in the film.
Dil Dhadakne Do has been directed by Zoya Akhtar and is all set to release on 5 June 2015.
