Christmas: What makes it the biggest Christian festival!

The season of Christmas is here and preparations are in full swing everywhere – buying gifts, decorating homes, baking cakes, sweets, etc. The air is filled with the spirit of joy and jubilation. It is that time of the year when love fills the air and Christmas is celebrated in such ways that love is shared and cherished.

However, many will not realise the fact that Christmas, the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, is not the ‘biggest’ festival of the Christians as it appears to be externally. Shock? But that is a fact. While it is the most anticipated and excitedly celebrated festival of the Christians, Christmas would have had a lesser meaning if Jesus never rose from the dead

The death and resurrection of Jesus, Christians believe, is the biggest feast of them all. If Jesus had not risen from death, many would not have considered him the Son of God; hence diluting celebrations for his birth on Christmas. Jesus’ victory over death has always been considered the greatest victory and the very foundation of their faith by Christians.

Having said that, Christmas has remained the most celebrated feast among the Christians and across the globe, even bigger than Easter. Why so?

Celebration of God’s Love:Christmas

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16

“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” – Mathew 1:21

These two quotes from the Bible, the Holy book of the Christians, speak volume about God’s love for mankind and who Jesus is.

Christmas is not just any celebration but of God’s love for mankind manifested in the birth of His son, Jesus, through whom He plans to save people from sins and eternal damnation.

Birthday of Jesus Christ:

Birthdays are always special, no matter to which religion, community or creed one belongs too. Life is a gift of God and the very birth, a celebration of life. And celebrating the birth of Jesus, the Son of God could not be any lesser. Rather, it is the biggest of all birthdays because the Son of God was born into the world to save sinners.

When Jesus was born in a manger, the Angels of heaven celebrated and sang ‘Glory to God in the highest and peace to His people on earth’. Even the shepherds, having visited the baby Jesus, sang and celebrated His birth.

Therefore, it is right in every way that Christmas is celebrated in the biggest way possible, after all Jesus is the Son of God.

The ‘Christmas Season’:

The season of Christmas is one of the most exciting festive seasons not only for the Christians but for the whole world; the preparation itself shows. Perhaps, it is the cold weather (except for Australia and parts of Southern hemisphere), the snow (in most parts of US and Europe) or the mere fact that it is a holiday season (in most parts of western world but thanks to Christmas). And of course, there is the Christmas Papa or the Santa Claus.

There is something in the air about the Christmas season that cannot be explained. The thoughts and feelings of Christmas just makes it so special. So, why not celebrate it in the biggest way possible?

Christmas Gifts:

The three wise from the East gifted baby Jesus with gold, frankincense and myrrh. Since then, gifts have always been associated with Christmas; no other Christian festival is associated with gifts except for Pentecost when the Holy Spirits were ‘gifted’ the Apostles.

Therefore, Christmas has become associated with gifts to and from loved and dear ones. The thought of gifts has always added to the excitement about Christmas and perhaps, this excitement to the fun of the festival, thereby making it the biggest feast of all.
