Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announces Rs. 500 crores for rain-hit districts
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Tamil Nadu on Monday announced Rs. 500 crore towards relief and rehabilitation measures in the State following the havoc caused by the heavy rains during the North-East monsoon. In a statement issued after visiting several rain-affected spots in Chennai, Ms. Jayalalithaa said she had explained to the people about the measures taken by her government.
Earlier, at a meeting with ministers and senior officials at the Secretariat, she reviewed the relief and rehabilitation measures being carried out in the State. She also sought to know about the damages caused by the heavy rains.
Meanwhile, the toll in the State due to incidents such as drowning, wall-collapse, and electrocution caused by heavy rains during the monsoon has gone up to 71.Ms. Jayalalithaa announced compensation to the families of 12 more persons who were killed in such incidents.
Normal life has been hit in Tamil Nadu as incessant rains led to inundation of large areas and authorities have shut down educational institutions.
