New Delhi, The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday claimed to be the world’s largest party with 87 million members, surpassing the Communist Party of China that has 86 million members.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the ambitious online membership drive in the presence of BJP chief Amit Shah and other senior leaders on November 1, 2014.
“Our national president Amit Shah has repeatedly focused on the need of workers and need for party to have clear base of supporters. It is through his commitment and efforts, and getting the team to work, that today we have emerged as the world’s largest political party,” said BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli.
The opposition parties, however, called it a farcical exercise with no commitment to ideology or the party.
“If it were not tragic for democracy, it would be comic. If by pressing a button you can get one crore membership in one week you can imagine the commitment to ideology, the commitment to a party, the involvement, participation, connection and closeness,” said Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi.
The Janata Dal (United) said that the BJP’s online membership drive is a farce.
“Earlier, they used to go to people to seek their membership. Now, they have abandoned it. It is only a paper work,” said JD (U) spokesperson K. C. Tyagi.
The BJP membership drive has reportedly received a huge response from Uttar Pradesh, which it swept in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls by winning 73 out of 80 seats.
