Bengaluru Gang rape case- Cubbon Park Guards raped woman
Bengaluru Gang rape case,A 30-year-old engineering graduate from Tumakuru was raped inside Cubbon Park on Wednesday night by two guards attached to the park. Night patrol policemen arrested the guards on learning about the incident from the woman who was found abandoned near the Coffee Day junction.
The victim visited Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA) located inside the park to enroll for tennis training at around 5 pm on Wednesday. Since it was a holiday, she was asked to return the next day. She asked the KSLTA staffers to provide her accommodation within the stadium premises. This was turned down. She stayed on.
At around 7 pm, KSLTA staffers asked her to vacate the premises and escorted her to a bus stand located near Century Club and KR Circle.
At around 9 pm, she allegedly returned to the KSLTA insisting on a place to stay saying she was there to ‘become a tennis star’ and that she did not want to leave without achieving the feat.The two accused, whose responsibilities include chasing out stragglers from the park after 7 pm, asked her to leave the park premises.
They allegedly escorted her out of the park once and dropped her off near the Coffee Day junction. She refused to leave and followed them back into the park again.
At around 11.30 pm, night patrol police team found her sitting on a pavement near the Coffee Day junction. Upon inquiry, she told the policemen that two guards of the park raped her inside a kuteer (canopy), on a bench.
She was immediately rushed to the police station located nearby. All night duty guards were rounded up and the victim identified two of them as rapists. Later, she was rushed to Bowring Hospital for the mandatory medical check-ups.
The accused admitted to having intercourse with her. They allegedly told the police it was a consensual affair since ‘she made advances herself’.
When police got in touch with her parents in Tumkuru, they were said to be shocked and told officers she had left for Bengaluru on Wednesday afternoon stating she has a job interview to attend. The victim is said to have been disturbed after going through two failed marriages. The arrested are from Assam and work for a security agency hired by the Department of Horticulture.
Home minister G Parameshwara said, “Yes, there has been a case of rape reported. Police have already taken action by arresting the accused. We are inquiring to ascertain why she went there to learn tennis at that time of the day. According to police, tennis training at KSLTA ends by 5 pm everyday. Members can practise till 7 pm. After that, only the clubhouse’s bar and restaurant remain open.
She was taken to the Cubbon Park police station and later to the Bowring Hospital where sexual assault was confirmed. The two accused were arrested on Thursday morning.
Family members later told the police that the woman had psychological problems and was under medication. A case has been registered under Section 376 of the IPC.
